How One Frog Made It to Safety in Aussie Floods

Hitches a ride on a green snake

Computer technician Armin Gerlach was visiting friends in the flood-hit Australian town of Dalby, Queensland, when he saw something remarkable: a frog hitching a ride on a green snake who was swimming to safety. They both made it to the shore.

Frogs like these are generally prey for snakes, but it’s well known that animals of all kinds can come together for the common good at times of crisis.

“It’s quite common when you have animals in floods or fires or disasters, they actually get together and don’t do anything,” said Gerlach. “[My friend] has seen foxes and rabbits forget their hunting instincts during natural disasters.”

The flooding in Australia is now considered the worst in a hundred years.

How adorable. My heart goes out to the animals affected by the floods in Australia. I'm praying for them every day.

This is very impressive! We can learn a lot of from nature. From an evolutionary point of view, it makes sense: if the prey can survive to breed, there can be a future food supply for the predator (in this case, the snake).
